It was an emotion filled occasion as the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) recently bids farewell to the former Director General Engr. Umar Buba Bindir.

The Chairperson of the occasion, Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and Chairman NOTAP Governing Council Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita who was represented by the Director Technology Transfer and Adaptation (TTA), Dr. Adeleye Talabi said that the Science and Technology family has lost a pillar and great promoter of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) in the person of Engr. Bindir.

Dr. Talabi recounted his working experience with Engr. Bindir when the latter was a director in the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology saying he was an exceptional engineer that can hardly be faulted in his sense of judgment at all times. He maintained that such talents cannot be hidden as according to him, it was Engr Bindir’s vibrancy and sound reasoning that has propelled him to his present position.
He said the Science Parks and Technology Innovation Corridor initiatives were projects initiated by Engr. Bindir before he left the Ministry and hoped that they will be properly implemented to propel the country’s technological revolution.

The Director General of National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Prof. Seidu Mohammed said that Engr. Bindir was on loan to Adamawa and so, will continue to belong to the family of Science and Technology. He said it was hard work that paved the way for the new position he is occupying and advised him to have an open door policy for consultations.

The acting Director General of NOTAP, Dr. Dan-Azumi Ibrahim said Engr. Bindir has always been the best among equals. He recalled with nostalgia the intellectual prowess exhibited by Engr. Bindir when they were in the University which singled him out for a foreign scholarship above all his mates.
He said the celebrant was a gifted individual that has continued to excel in every endeavor and prayed for the Almighty God to help him attain greater heights.

The representative of the Director General of Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) Dr. Mrs. Zainab Hamanga while thanking God for His continued blessings on Engr. Bindir said his appointment as the SSG Adamawa State was a stepping stone, adding that he had not reached his destination yet.

Former Director NOTAP Mrs. Araba-Lashman while pouring encomiums on the former Director General said she was not surprised when she heard about his new appointment because he deserves more than that. She said throughout her career in NOTAP she had not seen a chief executive as vibrant, versatile and articulate as Engr. Bindir especially considering his origin. She added that though NOTAP was blessed with energetic and meticulous technocrats, Engr. Bindir’s shoes may be very big for anybody to wear.

In his remarks, representative of the private sector at the event and the Principal Consultant CODUB, Mr. Chidi Umanu said Engr. Bindir was a special Nigerian with an unflinching passion for whatever he does especially as it affects Science, Technology and Innovation. He said his first contact with the out gone DG was in a seminar outside the country where Engr. Bindir was the only black man that spoke and after delivering his paper a white man stood up and said, Bindir for Nigerian President.

Speaking on behalf of the Staff that worked closely with Engr. Bindir, his former special adviser, Mr. Emeka Orji said Engr. Bindir was a detribalized Nigeria whose sense of judgment and direction can hardly be faulted. He recalled that amongst the personal aides of Engr. Bindir, he was the highest ranking and a Christian Igbo man while the outgone DG is a Muslim Fulani man. He added that some people may wonder why he appointed him as the highest ranking staff but that action testifies to the fact that he is a highly detribalized man who places value on what you can offer and not your origin.

The Director Consultancy Services of NOTAP, Mr. Adamu Tandama said the Office and the entire Ministry of Science and Technology will indeed miss the quality contributions usually offered by the out gone DG. He said it was not easy to work with Engr. Bindir because he is always on the fast lane and it becomes extremely difficult to catch up with his pace.

In her remarks, Director Corporate Planning NOTAP Mrs. Caroline Taiwo Ojo said the out gone DG initiated many projects and enhanced capacity building of Staff while in office.

Members of the Management Staff, Junior Staff and Staff Union of the Office took turns to shower praises on the out gone DG whom they described as a team player and leader of sterling qualities who was committed to the welfare of people.

Responding, out gone Director General NOTAP and current Secretary to Adamawa State Government Engr. Umar Bindir expressed appreciation for the tremendous support accorded him by the Staff of NOTAP while in office.He commended them for their sense of dedication to duty and patriotism which has made NOTAP one of the most accountable government organisations in Nigeria.Engr. Bindir urged the Staff to extend similar support to the acting Director General for the development of the agency in particular and the country in general.

Gifts were presented to Engr. Bindir by the Acting Director General NOTAP Dr.Dan-Azumi Ibrahim on behalf of the Management and Staff.
