Stakeholders Hail NOTAP on Technology Story Board Initiative
Stakeholders at the just concluded one day Stakeholders meeting on implementation of Technology Story board commended the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) for initiating and promoting the concept.
The commendation came after a brief historical background of the concept by the Director General of NOTAP and exhaustive pictorial presentations from the company representatives on the step-by-step production processes of their products. The companies that made presentation on their product manufacturing processes were BETA Glass, Eleme Petrochemical, CAPL, Nestle, Friesland campina, Natural Robber and Sokoto Cement.
The Director General of NOTAP, Engr. Umar Buba Bindir said the introduction of technology story board as a tool for promoting and popularizing science and technology in primary and post primary schools in Nigeria is to instill the culture of technology into our Children. He stated that the pictorial representation of product production processes at the earlier stage of the Children will expose their minds on the importance of science and technology to production of our every day goods and services.
He further stated that technology has been universally acknowledged not only as a vital tool for creation of wealth but also as a determining factor for global competitiveness. Adding that the level of development of any nation is usually measured in terms of the level and scope of industrial production, commerce, health care, social services which are according to him, enhanced by the application of technology in the promotion and exploitation of services. Engr. Bindir said there was a need to sow viable science and technology seeds through creative teaching at the basic education levels. “
The ability of a nation to compete favorably in global economy depends on its ability to build/develop technological capability, to exploit the opportunities offered by the current wave of trade liberalization”, he emphasized. He added that countries of northern hemisphere and more recently the emerging economies of Asia, who are hardly known for natural resources endowments, post huge external trade surpluses annually through royalty earnings from superior technologies.
In order to further strengthen the implementation of the Technology Story board Initiative, a committee made up of the following institutions NOTAP, UBEB, NBTE, representatives of state ministries of Education, Ministry of Science and Technology and the press was formed to present the initiative to the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology.
