Tetfund Dedicates 3 Billion Naira To Boost Demand Driven Research-Prof.Yakubu

The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has said that TETFUND dedicated the sum of N3 Billion as research fund for tertiary institutions in Nigeria in order to boost demand driven research, facilitate national development and enhance global competitiveness.
He stated this when a delegation from the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) led by the Director General Engr. Umar Bindir paid a visit to TETFUND to participate in a meeting of the Committee for the Disbursement of the N3 Billion Research Fund.
Prof. Yakubu said the Research Fund would address the issues of capacity building, improve quality teaching with provision for the training of students to PhD levels and raising the standards of tertiary education in the country.
He further said there was a dearth of PhD holders among the teaching staff in tertiary institutions adding that the situation had negatively impacted on the quality of research being conducted in the country.
Prof. Yakubu urged NOTAP to contribute its expertise in the area of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and Technology Transfer because, according to him, TETFUND would need to develop an appropriate IP policy being a research funding agency.
In his response, Engr. Bindir said that the creating of IP, the linking of research to industry and the sustainance of innovation are all based on solid technology. This, according to him, was the rationale behind the establishment of the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Offices (IPTTOs) in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. He added that NOTAP, as at present, had established 32 IPTTOs across the country and that some of them had already submitted R&D results and had obtained patents for their innovations.
He commended TETFUND for its determination to fund demand driven research and urged the intervention agency to also support the establishment of more IPTTOs because of its relevance in the creation of IP and ensuring technology transfer.
According to him, “funding need-based research is very important so NOTAP is eager to partner with TETFUND”.
In his remarks, the co-Chairman of the Research Fund, Dr. Emmanuel Denenu stressed the importance of writing quality research proposals without which the Research Fund could not be accessed. He urged researchers to do a proper homework before presenting their proposals for funding.
